BAGUIO CITY – The city government here continues to record a big number of recoveries despite an ongoing surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases.

Consolidation of daily statistics released by the city government showed that for seven days, from January 17-23, a total of 3,004 recoveries were logged along with 3,568 new Covid-19 cases.

There were also 22 deaths reported.

Aileen Refuerzo, city information office chief, on Monday said in a phone interview, “natutuwa tayo na marami ang gumagaling agad kahit nagpa-positive kasi karamihan ng taga Baguio nabakunahan na (we are happy that many of those tested positive of the virus immediately recover because majority of the residents here have been vaccinated).”

Data from the city vaccination operation center showed that as of January 20, the city has given the full dose of vaccine to 268,972 or 95.71 percent of the 281,000 target eligible adult population. A total of 67,521 have also received booster shots.

Likewise, there are 30,499 minors aged 12 to 17 years old who have received the full dose of vaccines.

The city began to experience a surge in Covid-19 cases in the first week of January from only two-digit active cases before the end of 2021.

Refuerzo, however, said the city has a high recovery rate since majority of the patients either have only mild infection or are asymptomatic.

She relayed that according to Mayor Benjamin Magalong, while there is high and fast transmission of the Omicron variant, most of the patients recover without the need for hospitalization or to be in an isolation facility.

“Vaccines did not promise to make us Covid-free but it assured that it will help prevent severe infections, hospitalizations, and deaths. This is why we will continue convincing people who have not been vaccinated to receive the vaccine. The best way to avoid hospitalization and death is to get that jab," Refuerzo quoted Magalong as saying.

“There is less hospitalization and less demand for oxygen and critical medicines than when the city experienced a surge due to the Delta variant,” the mayor added.

Refuerzo said “Based on empirical data, we can say that vaccines work,”

The city exceeded its self-imposed immunization target of 95 percent of the eligible adult population on January 15. (PNA)
