MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday said it would intensify its intelligence activities to crack down on sellers of fake medical supplies amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

In a statement, PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said he has directed all police units to monitor their areas of responsibility to determine if syndicates behind this scheme are operating in their localities.

This came as the Bureau of Customs on Friday seized PHP150 million worth of fake coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) antigen test kits, Chinese herbal medicines, and face masks in a raid at a warehouse in Quiapo Manila, which resulted in the arrest of a Chinese national whom it did not identify.

“We want to know the extent of their operation given the large quantity of confiscated items. If these products did not undergo government agencies regulation, then we aren’t sure if they are safe for use,” he said.

Carlos said the PNP will take a more aggressive step in curbing the root cause of this scheme, together with the guidance of the Department of Health.

“The PNP will wage a crackdown to curb the proliferation of these fake medical items,” Carlos said.

Carlos, meanwhile, advised the public to only buy medical items from accredited pharmacies and other related outlets. (PNA)
