DPWH embarks on P43-B infra projects in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is eyeing to implement PHP43 billion infrastructure projects in Eastern Visayas this year to improve the region’s roads and bridges network.

DPWH Eastern Visayas Regional Director Allan Borromeo on Wednesday said the budget will finance 1,246 projects in six provinces of the region.

"Some of the proposed projects tagged as priority are those under the ‘Build, Build, Build’ program of the present administration. These projects will largely contribute to the local and national development," Borromeo said in a statement.

Among these projects are the PHP330 million Mahaplag–Hilongos Road; PHP300 million Tacloban bypass road extension; PHP679 million for the ongoing storm surge protection: heightened road and tide embankment; PHP600 million Maasin coastal bypass road in Southern Leyte; PHP164 million access road leading to Pinipisakan Falls in Las Navas, Northern Samar; PHP1.31 billion Biliran Circumferential Road in Biliran province, PHP100 million Arteche, Barangay Catumsan - Jipapad - Las Navas - Catubig, Rawis Road in Eastern Samar.

Also listed as major projects are PHP300 million Calbayog City coastal road; PHP156 million Burauen-Albuera Road in Leyte; PHP100 million Capoocan - Dagum Diversion Road in Leyte; PHP100 million Buri Circumferential Road in Catbalogan City, Samar; PHP606 million Liloan-San Ricardo Road in Liloan, Southern Leyte; PHP110 milion Jaro-Rubas-Ormoc Road in Leyte; PHP100 million construction of Daguitan - Marabong flood control structure in Burauen, Leyte; and PHP96 million access road leading to Calumpijan Island and coastal road diving spot in Capoocan, Leyte.

Meanwhile, the DPWH reported that out of the 1,245 regular projects funded through PHP35.7 billion allotment in 2021, the agency was able to implement 1,221 projects.

Of the total, 894 were already completed while 327 are ongoing, and 33 have yet to start.

Major spending in 2021 were PHP7.5 billion for national roads, bypass, and diversion roads; PHP1.5 billion for the construction, rehabilitation, widening, and improvement of 31 bridges; PHP3.2 billion for 75 flood control structures; and PHP6.5 billion for multi-purpose and school buildings, local roads and bridges, flood control and drainage and water systems under local program.
