TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has prepositioned 24,939 family food packs (FFPs) in Eastern Visayas for possible flooding as several areas in the region continue to experience heavy rains.

The stocking of food supplies will ensure faster delivery of relief goods in case there would be severe flooding, the DSWD said in a statement on Thursday.

These food packs are stored at DSWD warehouses in Catarman, Northern Samar; Allen, Northern Samar; Can-avid, Eastern Samar; Palo, Leyte; Catbalogan City, Samar; Naval, Biliran; and Maasin City, Southern Leyte.

“The DSWD has been closely watching the weather situation in six provinces to guide us where to focus our response efforts,” the DSWD said.

Each FFP contains six kilos of rice, four cans of corned beef, four cans of tuna flakes, two cans of sardines, five sachets of coffee, and five sachets of cereal drink.

The incessant rains since March 6 have been due to a low pressure area affecting Visayas and Mindanao

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) earlier said the frequent rainfall will likely prevail in Eastern Visayas in the early part of March due to the northeast monsoon or “amihan” and La Niña.

Rains may continue this month since there are existing weather systems that have been affecting the region.

The region has been experiencing rains weekly since November 2021 and the wet season persists until this week. (PNA)
