MANILA – Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Thursday said newly-appointed Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) deputy director general Jay de Castro will bring a fresh perspective to running the country's penal system.

De Castro, who formerly worked at the Pecabar law office, took his oath on Wednesday and replaced then deputy director general Melvin Buenafe.

"Atty. Jay de Castro is a whiff of fresh air in the BuCor. He was in private law practice for a long time, specializing in labor management cases. He was a passionate anti-crime crusader, especially focusing on illegal drugs. he wrote a column in a daily tabloid. I understand he will be responsible for reformation activities as deputy DG at the BuCor," Guevarra said.

Buenafe tendered his irrevocable resignation in November 2019 and his position at the BuCor has since remained vacant.

De Castro will be joining the team headed by BuCor director-general Gerald Bantag, who was formally appointed to his post by President Rodrigo Duterte.

Prior to his formal appointment, Bantag served in a designated capacity as BuCor and kept his position under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. (PNA)
