TACLOBAN CITY – Samar province is mourning the death of former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Eduardo Nachura, who brought honor to the province.

Samar Governor Michael Tan said Nachura’s expertise in political and constitutional law made him one of the most respected Supreme Court Justices in the country.

“On behalf of the people of Samar, I send my heartfelt and deepest condolences to the family of our very own Justice Antonio Eduardo Nachura,” Tan said in a Facebook post on Monday.

Samar 2nd District Rep. Ann Tan also expressed on Facebook her sadness over the death of Nachura, known as a law expert, legislator, and educator.

Catbalogan City Mayor Dexter Uy shared photos on Facebook of him receiving Nachura’s political law book in 2019 signed by the latter.

“Truly, he is one of Catbalogan’s pride. May your legacy live on…,” the mayor said.

Nachura, 80, died on March 13 as announced by the High Court. He is survived by his wife Conchita Sison-Nachura and four children.

A native of Catbalogan City, Samar, Nachura served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from Feb. 7, 2007 to June 13, 2011.

During his four-year stint, he disposed of about 1,690 cases and penned 640 full-length decisions and resolutions.

He was elected as the Representative of Samar’s 2nd district for two terms from 1998 to 2004.

In 2006, he was appointed Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and Solicitor General by then-president Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo.

It was during the term of then-president Fidel Ramos that Nachura was named as Commissioner of the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board and Education Undersecretary. (PNA)
