ZAMBOANGA CITY – The city government has allocated PHP19 million for this year’s summer job schedule under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES).

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said Wednesday the Public Employment Services Office (PESO) is facilitating the hiring of more than 2,000 students and out-of-school youths.

Salazar said the students will be employed in two batches with 20 days of work per batch.

The first batch consisting of 1,400 students started working on April 22. Their employment ends on May 23.

The remaining number of students is scheduled to work sometime in June.

Salazar said each student will receive a daily salary of PHP547 of which 60 percent will be shouldered by the city government while the remaining 40 percent by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

They will work as clerks in government offices and at the same time engage in cleanliness and sanitation tasks in the barangays.

The SPES is DOLE’s youth employment-bridging program aimed at providing temporary employment to poor but deserving students, out-of-school youth, and dependents of displaced or would-be displaced workers during summer and/or Christmas vacation or any time of the year to augment the family’s income to help ensure that beneficiaries can pursue their education.
