Fire displaces 29 families in Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY – The fire that hit Barangay Rizal in La Paz District here around 5:40 a.m. on Monday destroyed an estimated PHP1.1 million worth of properties, according to the report of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

Initial investigation by the BFP said the fire started at the house of Mary An A. Francisco and spread to neighboring houses.

Investigators are still looking for the cause of the blaze that was declared controlled by 6:19 a.m.

A report from the City Social Welfare and Development Office said 23 houses were burned down and two were partially damaged.

Fire affected 29 families or 99 persons with four of the families as sharers and 25 as house owners.

“They are currently in evacuation centers and our CSWDO was able to immediately provide food and non-food assistance,” Donna Magno, Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer said in an interview.

She said the barangay hall, chapel, daycare center, and Sangguniang Kabataan hall have been used as evacuation centers since the school buildings are used as voting centers. (PNA)
