MANILA – The current unified vehicular volume reduction program (UVVRP), commonly known as number coding or color-coding scheme, is seen to remain for the foreseeable future, with the Metro Manila Council (MMC) still to discuss a newly-modified version of the policy.
In a televised interview over Net 25 on Thursday, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair and MMC chief Romando Artes said a new policy on number coding was earlier discussed by the MMC before the May 9 national elections.
He, however, said the MMC is yet to decide on its possible implementation as Metro Manila mayors, who make up the MMC, have requested additional data that will be provided “in the coming days or in the coming weeks.”
“Magmi-meet po kami ulit ng MMC para talakayin po ito kapag nasa amin na po yung datos na hiningi ng ilang mayors (The MMC will meet again to discuss this once we have the data asked by some of the mayors),” Artes said.
To date, the MMDA implements a modified form of the UVVRP which reduces the volume of vehicles along the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) and other major thoroughfares in Metro Manila by 40 percent during the evening rush hours.
Under this scheme, vehicles with license plates ending in particular numbers are prohibited from entering or plying Metro Manila from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Vehicles with a license plate ending with 1 and 2 are prohibited on Mondays; 3 and 4 on Tuesdays; 5 and 6 on Wednesdays; 7 and 8 on Thursdays; and 9 and 0 on Fridays. (PNA)
