MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reminds all candidates in the May 9 polls to submit their respective Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE) until June 8.

Comelec acting spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said those who withdrew their candidacies and political parties are also required to submit their expenses as well as contributions received during the campaign period.

"The law requires you (candidates) to file a SOCE. As long as you have been considered as candidates, you are obligated to file your SOCE," he said in a press briefing on Thursday.

He said winners in the recent polls, who did not submit their SOCEs are barred from assuming their posts until they file their statements.

He added that those who will fail to submit their SOCE for the second time will be subject to perpetual disqualification to hold public office.

Laudiangco also warned candidates that have exceeded their campaign spending limits that they face possible election offense charges.

"Those that have exceeded, it is considered an election offense. It carries possible imprisonment penalties," he said.

Under Republic Act No. 7166, every candidate and political party shall, within 30 days after the day of the election, file with the Comelec the "full, true, and itemized statement of all contributions and expenditures" in connection with the elections. (PNA)
