MANILA – The number of dengue cases reported from January 1 to May 7 this year is 6 percent lower compared to the figures in the same period last year.

In a statement, the Department of Health (DOH) said its Epidemiology Bureau (EB) recorded 25,268 dengue cases from January 1 to May 7 this year, lower than the 27,010 cases during the same period in 2021.

The weekly dengue case counts this year were also significantly lower, except from March 20 to April 30 or morbidity weeks 12 to 17.

The dengue cases reported during those weeks reached 11,435 or 94 percent higher than the 5,901cases reported during the same period in 2021.

Regions 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) are the areas contributing to the increase in dengue cases in the recent morbidity weeks.

“Cumulatively, most dengue cases were reported from Region 7 at 13 percent or 3,198 cases, Region 3 at 12 percent or 3,087 cases, and Region 9 at 10 percent or 2,522 cases,” the DOH said.

“In the most recent reported period, from April 10 to May 7, 2022 where 6,622 cases were reported, most of the cases were also from the same regions with Region 9 making up 14 percent or 908 cases, Region 7 at 13 percent or 881 cases, and Region 3 at 9 percent or 593 cases,” it added.

The DOH urged the public to practice the following 4S strategy to avoid the continuous increase in dengue cases.

It includes search and destroy breeding places, secure self-protection, seek early consultation, and support fogging or spraying in hotspot areas. (PNA)
