LAOAG CITY – Set to compete in the 2022 Little League Philippine Series national finals in Dasmarinas, Cavite, the best players from Ilocos Norte were given close to P500,000 in funding support from the provincial government.

In an urgent appropriation ordinance, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan unanimously approved on Tuesday a total of PHP497,500 sourced from a trust fund under the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation to be used by the athletes.

According to Helen Rose Domingo, sports development officer of Ilocos Norte, the young athletes will leave for Cavite on Wednesday (July 1) in preparation for the finals from June 3 to 6, 2022.

“Prior to the competition, our athletes trained for 10 days in preparation for the event,” said Domingo as she expressed gratitude to the officials of the provincial government for their quick approval of the budget.

Winners in the national finals will represent the country in the Asia Pacific Championship to be held in South Korea. With a score of 16-0, the baseball team (12 years under) in Ilocos Norte was recently named champions in the Philippine Baseball League-Northern Luzon held in Ilagan, Isabela.

This year’s Little League Philippine Series is the largest baseball tournament in the country with over 1,500 boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 12 competing for the right to represent the country in the Asia-Pacific Regional Tournament to be held in July. (PNA)
