MANILA – The Diocese of Sorsogon on Monday appealed to the faithful for donations to those affected by the eruption of the Bulusan Volcano in the province.

“As per Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Juban, beddings, masks, food packs, bottled water are the immediate needs in the Evacuation Center plus Respiratory meds/interventions,” Rev. Fr. George Fajardo, Caritas Sorsogon director, said in an interview over Church-run Radio Veritas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has placed Mt. Bulusan under alert level 1 following a phreatic eruption on Sunday, with people now prohibited to enter its four-kilometer permanent danger zone.

Based on the monitoring by Caritas Sorsogon, some 45 families or over 150 people are now in evacuation centers in the town of Juban.

Fajardo said there are no reported evacuees in churches, but they are coordinating with the local government units for the needs of the affected residents.

“Currently, there are no evacuees in the Irosin and Juban Churches. The immediate danger is the inhalation of ash so the LGUs (local government units) have an advisory to stay at home and use a facemask, hopefully, it will rain these days to remove the ash from the roofs and roads,” he said. (PNA)
