DAVAO CITY – Mayor Sara Z. Duterte is not in favor of scrapping the wearing of face masks in the city, the Davao City Covid-19 Task Force said Monday.

This came after the Cebu provincial government lifted the mandatory wearing of face masks in open and outdoor spaces as a step toward the province's “new normal.”

“The city government has no plans to lift the rule on the wearing of face masks as mandated under Executive Order (EO) 11 Series of 2022,” Dr. Michelle Schlosser, the task force spokesperson, said in a radio interview.

Schlosser face mask restrictions both in open or enclosed spaces will remain indefinitely.

Duterte signed EO 11, also known as An Order Lifting All Covid-19 Restrictions in Davao City, on March 7.

It allowed the lifting of Covid-19 rules, including the use of the Davao Quick Response (DQR) for contact tracing, but retained the wearing of face masks.

Schlosser said the wearing of a face mask is still strongly recommended by the Department of Health and the World Health Organization, as it is the only way to prevent the transmission of disease from respiratory droplets of infected and non-infected persons.

“The transmission can only be hampered through the wearing of face masks. We cannot see the respiratory droplets; they are very microscopic,” she said. (PNA)
