MANILA – The Philippine Embassy in Wellington vowed to extend assistance to the bereaved family of Filipinos killed in a deadly road accident in Picton, New Zealand.

In a public post on Tuesday, Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand Jesus Domingo extended his sympathies to the victims' families.

"Our condolences and prayers for our Kababayan who perished in Picton. The Embassy & POLO (Philippine Overseas Labor Office) in Wellington are assisting the family," he said on Facebook.

New Zealand-based news site Stuff said nine people were in the van when it collided head-on with a truck on State Highway 1 between Blenheim and Picton on Sunday (New Zealand time). Seven of them were killed.

The site was the first to report that the group includes members of the Filipino community.

However, neither the outlet nor the Embassy cited the exact number of Filipino casualties. (PNA)
