CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Northern Mindanao's biggest media organization has called on authorities to conduct a deeper, multi-agency investigation into the killing of a blocktime radio broadcaster here.
In a statement Wednesday evening, Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) president Frank Mendez called on the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) and the National Bureau of Investigation to launch a joint investigation to identify and arrest the killer/s of Federico “Deng” Gempesaw.
Gempesaw, 62, was shot dead on Wednesday morning at his residence in Sitio Macanhan, Barangay Carmen.
“It is believed that this incident will continue if the crime is not solved, and another life of the media member will be lost,” Mendez said.
COCPO investigators said Gempesaw sustained two gunshot wounds from a gunman who fled on a waiting motorcycle driven by another suspect.
Gempesaw became a blocktime radio commentator after his stint as a city hall official under the term of the late Mayor Vicente Emano.
The local political party is headed by outgoing Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano, who will serve as the incoming 2nd district representative of the province.
Emano has offered a PHP500,000 reward for those who can give information that could identify and lead to the arrest of the assailants.
Ronald Rufin, manager of the radio station, said he does not know if the victim has received threats. (PNA)
