US, China discuss global economy, commodity prices, food security

ANKARA – US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen held a virtual meeting with China's Vice Premier Liu He to discuss the global economy, commodity prices and food security, according to the agency.

"During the candid and substantive conversation, they discussed macroeconomic and financial developments in the United States and China, the global economic outlook amid rising commodity prices and food security challenges," it said Monday.

"Secretary Yellen frankly raised issues of concern including the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on the global economy and unfair, non-market PRC (People’s Republic of China) economic practices," it added.

The meeting was part of US President Joe Biden administration’s efforts to maintain open lines of communication, it said.

The US had a trade deficit of more than USD34.9 billion with China in April and USD112.7 billion in the first quarter of 2022, according to the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. (Anadolu)
