ANKARA, ISTANBUL – Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot Friday during a political event and is unconscious and unresponsive, local media reported.

According to Tokyo-based Kyodo News, Abe was delivering a speech at a political event on a street in the western city of Nara when he was "shot from behind by an unknown person."

Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported that Abe collapsed soon after the gunshot was heard.

The report added that Abe was seen "bleeding."

Police caught a suspect who is being questioned, according to NHK. (Anadolu)
