DIGOS CITY – A seven-year-old boy died on the spot, while his five-year-old brother was injured after a grenade they were playing with exploded at Sitio Buongon, Barangay Rizal in Malalag town, Davao del Sur on July 7.

In a police report Saturday, P/Captain Jocyviel Zamora, Malalag police chief said he received a call from a village councilor of Barangay Rizal about the grenade explosion at around 11:05 a.m. that inflicted injuries on the two minors, hence requesting police assistance and rescue ambulance.

Investigators rushed to the scene and found the body of Christian and his injured brother Kent near the tomb of their great grandmother where they were reportedly playing with the explosive that they had found somewhere else.

Their grandmother who was inside the house heard the explosion and saw her bloodied grandchildren and immediately called for help, the police report said.

Personnel of the municipal disaster risk reduction and management office (MDRRMO) rushed Kent to the Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital in Digos City for treatment.

Malalag police later confirmed that it was indeed a hand grenade but they have yet to establish where the kids found the explosive. (PNA)
