COTABATO CITY – Law enforcement authorities in Lanao del Sur have neutralized a suspect believed to be behind the murder of a Muslim cleric in April this year, a police official said Tuesday.

Col. Jibin Bongcayao, Lanao del Sur police provincial director, said a shootout erupted as the operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) were about to arrest Jack Macaraya at his residence in Barangay Tuka Kialdan in Marantao Monday.

“Macaraya pulled a pistol and opened fire on approaching lawmen, provoking a shootout. He was killed on the spot,” Bongcayao said in a report to the Police Regional Office – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

A Marawi City court issued an arrest warrant against Macaraya for the killing of Muslim preacher Ustadz Emran Langco Macadato, who he allegedly killed using a knife during a robbery holdup in April this year.

Macaraya fled after killing Macadao bringing with him cash and valuables of the latter, police said.

Bongcayao said Macaraya's remains were immediately turned over to relatives for immediate burial following Muslim tradition. (PNA)
