DPWH builds breakwater structure in Sorsogon City

MANILA – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is undertaking the construction and maintenance of Bacon Boulevard Breakwater Structure in Barangay Poblacion, Sorsogon City.

In a report to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, Regional Office 5 Director Virgilio Eduarte said the ongoing project involves the construction of a 615.28-linear breakwater structure.

The project consists of four contract packages: Packages 1 and 2 with a combined length of 286.78 linear meters, completed in November 2021.

Packages 3 and 4 that are still underway will have a combined length of 328.5 linear meters.

The project allocation for Packages 1 and 2 are at PHP67.5 million and Packages 3 and 4 are at PHP93.5 million.

“When fully completed, the breakwater will act as the first line of defense to safeguard the residents of Barangay Poblacion from coastal flooding and storm surges during inclement weather,” Eduarte said in a statement on Tuesday.

He added that aside from protecting the residential area, the flood mitigation structure also reduces coastal erosion and provides safe mooring and berthing for fishing vessels.

Implemented by DPWH Sorsogon First District Engineering Office, the project is set to be completed by December 2022. (PR)
