MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is looking to ask Congress for PHP6.8 billion in funding to address the current production backlog of license plates for both four-wheeled and two-wheeled vehicles.

In a Laging Handa briefing on Wednesday, LTO officer in charge Romeo Vera Cruz said the facilities to produce the license plates are already in place, with the LTO’s modern plate-making plant equipped with two robots -- one for motorcycle plates and another for four-wheeled vehicles.

Wala pong problema sa pag-produce ng plaka because we have modern plate-making plant. Kapag mayroon pong plate eh gagawin po natin iyan (There is no problem with producing plates because we have a modern plate-making plant. Once we have the plates, then we’ll work on them),” Vera Cruz said.

Aside from buying plates, he said the funds would also be used to buy spare parts and get all of the LTO’s engravers up and running.

“Our engravers are five years old na, may mga problema na po sa mga spare parts (Our engravers are five-years-old already. We have a problem with spare parts),” he said.

To date, he said the plant is running with two production shifts and is capable of up to three shifts.

“We need funding and only Congress can provide us with funding,” he said.

On the other hand, he said the LTO is continuing its efforts on digitalization to provide a “faster” and more “convenient” service to the public.

Naumpisahan na iyan four years ago. Mayroon lang kaunting mga problema and inaayos po natin iyan para mapabilis po ang ating pag-process ng ating driver’s license at saka registration ng ating mga motor vehicle (We have started this four years ago. There are still some problems and we’re working on them to hasten the processing of driver’s licenses and registration of motor vehicles),” he said.

He said these problems include data migration issues and some other bugs on the Land Transportation Management System (LTMS) portal.

Sa pangkalahatan po, we have already experienced na mabilis po ang ating pag-process nitong licenses natin at saka registration. Ito lang na nagkataon na may glitches na nangyayari po (In general, we have experienced our service becoming faster, the processing of licenses and registrations),” he said. (PNA)
