LEGAZPI CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is assisting in the improvement and modernization efforts on salt and seaweed production in Catanduanes province.

"The Provincial Science and Technology of Catanduanes has been facilitating and coordinating with the LGU (local government unit) of Bato together with the members of Bote Salt Makers and Seaweed Growers Association for a project under the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) program," DOST-Catanduanes Director Marie Grace Molina said in an interview on Thursday.

She said the project aims to provide new technology that will sustain salt production despite the changing weather conditions.

"The CEST program seeks to alleviate poverty in the country by delivering sustainable development through S&T (science and technology) interventions in livelihood, health and nutrition, environmental protection and conservation, education, and disaster risk reduction management," she said.

Installing new technology in the existing salt-making facility which is being managed and handled by the Bote Salt Makers and Seaweed Growers Association is expected to help improve the community's income.

DOST-Catanduanes will also conduct additional training and technical support for the stakeholders. (PNA)
