TACLOBAN CITY – The repair of the access road leading to Maasin City Airport damaged by recent destructive typhoons is halfway done, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported on Friday.

The PHP88.3-million project funded under the quick response fund is upgrading a 110-meter road damaged by Typhoon Odette last December 2021 and Tropical Storm Agaton last April.

“Odette damaged the airport terminal while Agaton caused massive soil erosion on the access roads and runway,” said DPWH Southern district engineering office chief Manolo Rojas.

The extent of the two typhoons’ damage has affected the operation of the airport and seaports in Southern Leyte.

The situation prompted their office to request funds from the central government to carry out the immediate repair.

The rehabilitation of the access road is considered urgent, according to Rojas since it is regarded as a vital facility.

If the rehabilitation process is slowed, it will disrupt traffic flow, causing delays in travel and goods transport, he added.

Aside from the access road repair, four other regular infrastructure projects are being implemented and ongoing in Maasin City Airport.

Two of which are road concreting and the other two are multipurpose buildings. (PNA)
