ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will provide this city’s Sacol Island with an internet connection.

DICT 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) Director Maria Teresa Camba said Saturday that the unused tower in Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay would be installed on Sacol Island.

She said once the tower is installed, Sacol Island could get an internet signal from the nearest DICT relay station in Barangay Talon-Talon.

The island, which consists of barangays Landang Gua, Landang Laum, Busay, and Pasilmanta, has elementary and secondary schools. It is one of Zamboanga City’s sources of seafood.

Camba said they could complete the installation of the needed infrastructure by the third quarter of this year and finally provide free internet service to the barangays, schools, and health centers.

“To the residents, rest assured DICT will provide connectivity on the island,” she said, adding that the move is in line with the department’s mission to connect Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas to the rest of the world via the internet. (PNA)
