BUTUAN CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) declared Litalit Bay in the town of San Benito in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, free of red tide.

This was indicated in the BFAR Shellfish Bulletin dated July 22, a copy of which was obtained by the Philippine News Agency Tuesday.

The bulletin also warned residents not to consume shellfish gathered from Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur as it remains positive for paralytic shellfish poison or toxic red tide.

“All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or “alamang” gathered from Lianga Bay are not safe for human consumption,” the bulletin said.

Meanwhile, the red tide in Lianga Bay, based on BFAR laboratory studies, is still beyond the regulatory limit.

However, the agency said fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs from the Lianga Bay are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking. (PNA)
