DAVAO CITY – Some 259 families who evacuated due to flooding here have safely returned home with no casualties recorded, the Davao City Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported Wednesday.

In a statement, CDRRMO chief Alfredo Baloran said the families were evacuated Tuesday night after the swelling of two major rivers in the city following hours of heavy downpour.

Of the 259 families, 139 families are from Barangay Matina Crossing, 43 (Matina Pangi), 52 (Matina Aplaya), three (Catalunan Pequeño), 21 (Talomo Proper), and one family from Barangay Sto. Niño.

With this, Baloran advised residents to always stay vigilant and follow advisories given by concerned agencies in times of flooding or landslides.

“We are still experiencing La Niña and this is coupled with the rainy season and localized thunderstorms. We must always be prepared because the rain will cause flooding of creeks and rivers to overflow,” he said.

In observance of the National Disaster Resilience Month this July, Baloran said their office aims to ensure preparedness during disasters by conducting training to provide immediate response to people in distress. (PNA)
