MANILA – The Diocese of Kidapawan will conduct a special collection in all its parishes in this Sunday's (July 31) masses to help the victims of magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Abra and nearby provinces in Northern Luzon on July 27.

Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo issued an appeal to all parish priests and the faithful to feel the spirit of concern for others especially the victims of the disaster.

"In the spirit of communion and solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are suffering because of the recent earthquake that affected the North western Luzon particularly in Ilocos provinces, Abra, Tabuk-Kalinga and Mountain Province, I am appealing for your generosity and kindness,” he said in an interview over Church-run Radio Veritas on Saturday.

The Catholic prelate is aware of the difficult experience of earthquake victims because the diocese was once damaged by strong earthquakes in 2019.

Bagaforo said instead of earmarking for the seminary of the diocese, the funds to be raised would be given to the affected dioceses in the region.

The donation from the second collections can be brought to the Diocesan Finance Office as soon as possible for immediate distribution to the affected dioceses.

The tremor damaged several famous old churches in the area such as Sta. Catalina de Alexandria Church and San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine in Abra, and the Vigan Cathedral and St. John the Baptist Church in Ilocos Sur.

The social action ministries of the dioceses continue to assess the extent of the damage sustained to formulate rehabilitation measures. (PNA)
