MANILA – A magnitude 5.1 earthquake jolted Eastern Samar early Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The tectonic quake struck 13 kilometers northeast of the municipality of General MacArthur at 1:10 a.m. and had a depth of 57 kilometers.
Intensity V was felt in General MacArthur, Hernani and Quinapondan in Eastern Samar; Pastrana, Palo and Tacloban City in Leyte
Phivolcs also recorded the following instrumental intensities:
Intensity III - Abuyog, Alangalang, Leyte
Intensity II - Hilongos, Mahaplag, Baybay, Leyte; Hinunangan, Southern Leyte
Intensity I - Ormoc City, Albuera, Leyte; Sogod, Southern Leyte
Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.
Aftershocks are likely but damage is not expected from the tremor.
