BUTUAN CITY – As a growing industrial center in the Caraga Region and with seven of its 10 municipalities and one city situated along the seashores, a legislator proposes to build a Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) office in Agusan del Norte.

Agusan del Norte 2nd District Rep.Dale Corvera filed House Bill No. 3501, a measure seeking the establishment of MARINA in Nasipit town.

In a statement Saturday, Corvera’s office said the Port of Nasipit is of international standards and is one of the nearest ports in Mindanao coming from other ports in Visayas and Luzon.

“Among the functions of MARINA is to ensure the orderliness in sea transportation and make sure that sea vessels are safe,” it read.

It added that MARINA is also responsible for the registration and the issuance of Certificate of Public Convenience to all sea vessels.

“MARINA is also mandated to enforce the 1978 International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers and the other international agreements or covenants,” it said.

The MARINA, given its functions and mandates, would be of great help to the people and the development of the second district of Agusan del Norte, the bill said.

Corvera’s office likewise noted the increased registration of seafarers, not only in Agusan del Norte but also in other provinces in the region. (PNA)
