LAOAG CITY – The city government of Batac on Thursday said it is planning to hire more teachers to assist young learners from Grades 1 to 3, as schools prepare for the return of in-person classes next week.

Batac Mayor Albert Chua said the city recognizes the need to prioritize the education sector and give special attention to learners after being in distance learning for the past two years.

He added the teachers to be hired by the city government will serve as “tutors," particularly in Reading, Mathematics, and Science subjects.

"This way, it would be easier for the young learners to catch up with their lessons when they reach higher grades of learning," he said, though the number of teachers to be hired has yet to be decided based on the city government's assessment.

For now, the local government is looking for tutors for Grade 1 to 3 only as part of the first phase of the hiring program, with the next levels to follow if the initial phase becomes effective.

At the provincial level, the Department of Education is still hiring teaching and non-teaching personnel to augment the various learning delivery modalities that promote the achievement and progression of learners.

Prior to the opening of classes next week, Schools Division Superintendent Joann Corpuz urged all learners to be vaccinated against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to ensure their protection while the province is still under Alert Level 1 status.

Corpuz reported that self-learning modules will still be used this school year to supplement the pandemic-induced transition to blended learning. (PNA)
