BACOLOD CITY – The City of Bago in Negros Occidental has awarded a cash incentive of PHP100,000 to its homegrown athletes who won third place in the just-concluded 2022 Junior League Softball World Series in Kirkland, Washington, United States.

The students of Ramon Torres National High School, who represented the Asia-Pacific Region, were honored by the city government during the recognition ceremony held at the city’s Community Center on Monday.

The Philippine Series champions in the 12 to 14 age group secured a bronze medal after a 3-0 victory over Las Vegas, Nevada.

Head coach Josie Sebunga said her wards had a “very memorable” experience during the tournament, which was participated in by 10 teams from across the world.

Sebunga said all the teams they defeated, including three from the US, en route to the semi-finals were not able to score against them.

On the other hand, the Philippines was able to score against all the teams who defeated them, she said.

“They were first timers in a world-class tournament. They did their best to bring home the honor for the country. Thank God, we were able to finish in third place,” she added.

Team captain Layle Baladjay said she brings back the glory to God for their achievement and acknowledged the support of the city government led by Mayor Nicholas Yulo for supporting their journey in the World Series.

“This is just the beginning for us,” she added.

In his message, Yulo said Bago City is beaming with pride for the success of their “very own” Junior League team.

“I personally would like to congratulate our softball girls and their coaches for their hard work, dedication, and perseverance in bringing honor not only to Bago City, but to the entire nation as well,” he said.

In a resolution, the City Council said the Bago City girls are being granted a cash incentive for bringing honor and pride to both the city and the country. (PNA)
