‘Florita’ causes floods, landslides in Bicol

LEGAZPI CITY – At least 20 flooding incidents and two minor landslides were reported in the provinces of Camarines Sur and Albay on Tuesday, according to the Office of Civil Defense in Bicol (OCD-5).

Gremil Alexis Naz, OCD-5 spokesperson, said in an interview that heavy rains were spawned by Tropical Storm Florita, which made landfall over Maconacon, Isabela.

"Fifteen out of the 20 flooding incidents were in Legazpi City, two in Libon, one in Camalig, all in Albay province, and one in Caramoan and Nabua Camarines Sur. of all the reported flooded areas, only the Nabua, Camarines Sur has not yet subsided," he said.

Naz said five roads were initially reported to be unpassable, but two have been announced passable to motorists as of this writing.

Four seaports in Barangay Guijalo in Caramoan, Tamban in Gatchitorena, Nato in the municipality of Sagnay and Sabang in San Jose in Camarines Sur suspended operations.

"We are continuously monitoring and coordinating with the disaster risk reduction management offices of the affected provinces," Naz said.

Meanwhile, Albay, Camarines Sur, and Camarines Norte issued a province-wide suspension of classes until Wednesday.

As of the 11 a.m. bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), "Florita" made landfall in Isabela with maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up 150 km/h while moving north northwestward at 20 km/h.
