BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Information and Communications Technology in the Caraga Region (DICT-13) has installed HF (high-frequency) radio equipment at the DICT Surigao del Norte Provincial Office in Surigao City to efficiently transmit signals particularly during disasters.

“The HF radio is not dependent on the inherent infrastructure that cellular technology uses, such as communications towers and internet technologies,” DICT-13 said in a statement Friday.

The device, it added, can be effectively and efficiently utilized when disaster strikes, and even during post-disaster operations.

Thursday's installation of the HF radio came months after the onslaught of Typhoon Odette in December 2021, which severely destroyed the province's infrastructure and communication systems.

Post-disaster operations also encountered difficulties due to the destroyed communication systems.

Through the HF Radio, the DICT-13 sees alternative and effective communication systems whenever the other facilities are disabled in times of disasters. (PNA)
