ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Army’s 11th Infantry Division (ID) has activated another battalion to boost its fight against the extremist Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in the island province of Sulu.

In a statement Tuesday, Maj. Gen. Ignatius Patrimonio, 11ID and Joint Task Force (JTF)-Sulu head, said he formed the 104th Infantry Battalion (IB) to mount a sustained campaign against the ASG.

The 104IB, which officially went into service on Monday, is set to boost the capability of his command on its peace, security, and development campaign in Sulu.

“I designated Lt. Col. Roland Arreola as the first-ever 104IB commander.  He will lead and manage the unit 104th while undergoing organizational training,” Patrimonio said.

Arreola expressed readiness to lead the new battalion.

“To assume the post as commanding officer of the 104IB is one thing that honors me no end,” he said.

Patrimonio urged the men and women of the new battalion to perform well and remain steadfast amid the challenges they will encounter in the future.

“Capacitating your force on your unit activation will propel you forward to cope and complement with the tall order of higher headquarters to defeat the terrorists here in Sulu,” he said.

In 2018, the 11ID activated three battalion units that included the 100IB, 101IB, and the newest 104IB.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte led the activation of the 11ID on Dec. 17, 2018 at Camp General Teodulfo. (PNA)
