BUTUAN CITY – The local government unit (LGU) of General Luna in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, has expressed its gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and House Speaker Martin Romualdez for sending out cash aid intended for surfers and boatmen in the area.

In a statement Wednesday, General Luna Mayor Sol Matugas said the beneficiaries are considered the most affected sectors in the town during the onslaught of Typhoon Odette in December last year.

Some 150 surfers and 150 boatmen received a total of PHP900,000 through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The release of the AICS last Sept. 3 was led by Presidential son, William Vincent Marcos, and the Speaker’s son, Andrew Romualdez.

Each of the beneficiaries received PHP3,000 financial aid during the distribution activity.

“We are thankful to President Marcos and Speaker Romualdez for the help extended to the people of General Luna, especially to our boatmen and surfers,” Matugas said.

She added that town residents also appreciated the efforts of the young Marcos and Romualdez in handing out the aid to the beneficiaries.

“The surfers and boatmen were glad for personally engaging the Presidential son and the son of our House Speaker during the distribution activity,” Matugas said.

In a separate statement Wednesday, Surigao del Norte First District Representative Francisco Jose Matugas II said the Office of Speaker Romualdez funded the AICS received by the affected surfers and boatmen.

Matugas said the aid will help the surfers and boatmen in the town whose livelihood were destroyed during the calamity. (PNA)
