ZAMBOANGA CITY – Three persons, including a former barangay official, were killed while four others were wounded in separate shooting incidents in Basilan province, police said Thursday.
Killed were Talamon Jemmy, 59, a businessman and former councilor of Barangay Lumuton, Lamitan City, Basilan; and Majil Taalil, 60, and Maldiya Taalil Baakal, 39; both of Sumisip town.
In a report, the Lamitan police said Jemmy was driving a motorcycle around 11 a.m. Thursday on his way to Barangay Sengal, Lamitan City, to attend an elopement settlement involving his nephew when ambushed.
Several meters away from his supposed destination, one of two perpetrators riding tandem on a motorcycle repeatedly shot Jemmy and sped off towards the direction of Isabela City.
Jemmy expired while undergoing treatment at the Lamitan District Hospital.
Meanwhile, Col. Richard Verceles, operations chief of the Area Police Command-Western Mindanao, said Taalil and Baakal were killed in a strafing incident carried out by still unidentified gunmen around 1:30 a.m. Thursday in Barangay Guiong, Sumisip.
Verceles said the two and other members of the family were in sleeping in their residence when attacked.
He said four other members of the family, including an infant and two children, were wounded in the incident.
All those injured were brought to the hospital for treatment.
Sumisip police investigators are looking into the possibility of “rido” (clan war) as a possible motive behind the incident. (PNA)
