MANILA – Thirty-one suspects will face criminal charges after they were arrested in Pasig City over an investment scam that preys on retired Australian and British nationals, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported over the weekend.

The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group arrested the suspects posing as call center agents in Barangay Kapitolyo after receiving numerous complaints from Australian nationals enticed to invest in a pension plan.

After closing the deal, the money is spread to different bank accounts until it reaches a controlled dummy bank account.

PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. cautioned the public against the telemarketing scam where investors are provided documents of the transactions but later on, will find out they cannot withdraw their money.

“We work as one government of public servants aspiring to provide a safer community for the people to live in. By responding swiftly to these complaints, even how complicated it may seem, is a testament that we act on every possible way to resolve criminality even at this modern day and age,” Azurin said in a statement on Saturday.
