P80-M educational aid distributed to 35K students in Davao Region

DAVAO CITY -- Some PHP80 million have been disbursed for the educational payout in Davao Region from Aug. 20 to  Sept. 17, the regional Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-11) office said Monday.

In an interview, DSWD-11 Director Vanessa Goc-ong said the amount was received by some 35,933 students in various grade levels in the region.

The aid is under the DSWD's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations program, which has been extended to cover students in crisis or emergencies.

The DSWD-11 regional office here served some 11,165 beneficiaries with PHP26.59 million disbursed.

In other parts of the region, some 5,254 recipients in Davao del Norte got PHP11.61 million aid; Davao de Oro - 5,270 beneficiaries (PHP12.18 million); Davao Oriental - 4,701 students (PHP10.48 million); Davao del Sur - 5,418 students with PHP10.92 million; and Davao Occidental's 4,125 students with PHP9.11 million.

A 74-year-old grandmother, Albina Cabel, said she received PHP2,000 educational aid on Sept. 17 for her grandchild.

“As a guardian, I am so thankful for the AICS program. I will use this to buy school supplies and for my grandchild’s school allowance,” Cabel said.

Cabel also thanked the social workers who made the payout convenient and smooth.

Maura Azucena, 68, who also got PHP2,000 assistance, lauded the agency for its swift service.

“Thank you DSWD, I can now buy school uniforms and other school needs for my grandchild,” she said. (PNA)
