DAVAO CITY – The Police Regional Office in Davao Region (PRO-11) on Wednesday urged the academe to intensify its monitoring and regular communication with the fraternity groups existing in their institutions.

Brig. Gen. Benjamin Silo Jr., PRO-11 director, issued the call after the death of a 19-year-old student due to hazing.

In a press briefing here, Silo said the police would appreciate if the academe could come up with a strict anti-hazing policy in accordance with Republic Act 8049 or the Anti-Hazing Law.

“The hazing activities happen in confined facilities, and it is committed and unknown to the academe. (If they have such policies), such incidents will be lessened, if not stopped,” the PRO-11 chief said.

August Ceazar Saplot, a "pledgee" of the Alpha Kappa Rho Fraternity (AKHRO), died after reportedly undergoing hazing in Buhangin District on September 18.

Saplot was with another "pledgee," an 18-year student who managed to escape but sustained serious injuries. The student is still being treated at a hospital, police said.

Silo said the police will coordinate with the academic institutions to avoid the same incident.

“PRO-11 will work for hand in hand with the academic institutions to avoid incidents like this and loss of life,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Alberto Lupaz, Davao City Police Office chief, said the eight suspects have been charged with the violation of Republic Act 8049.

“The other six are still at large. Our cops are conducting an investigation of their whereabouts,” Lupaz said. (PNA)
