CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – A total of 143 fisherfolks from San Luis and Casiguran towns in Aurora province have benefited from the government’s fuel subsidy program that aims to ease the impact of rising oil prices on the local fishing industry.

This is the first batch of fisherfolk-beneficiaries in Aurora since the program was launched in the region at the Subic fish port in March, this year.

Each fisherfolk beneficiary on Thursday received PHP3,000 in the form of fuel discount cards.

Aurora provincial fisheries officer Rex Sabalucca said on Friday the provision of the fuel discount in the province came very timely to cushion the effect of the increasing oil prices in the fishing operations.

BFAR Central Luzon Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz said their agency was doubling efforts to reach the targeted 6,702 fishers in the entire region.

To avail of the fuel subsidy, eligible fisherfolk and/or members of fisherfolk cooperatives and associations must be registered under the fisherfolk registration program or FishR.

They must be using motorized boats with a capacity of three gross tons or below and registered under the boat registration program or BoatR and must be using environment-friendly fishing gears. (PNA)
