ZAMBOANGA CITY – A town official in Lanao del Sur has turned over three high-powered firearms, yielded to him by residents, to military authorities as the government continues its campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms.

The firearms– two M-16 Armalite rifles and caliber 5.56-millimeter Bushmaster– were turned over on Wednesday by Mayor Juhar Disomimba of Tamparan to Lt. Col. Victor-Czar Villanueva, 5th Infantry Battalion chief.

In a statement Saturday, Villanueva said Disomimba together with the Tamparan police brought the firearms to his headquarters at Kampo Agila in Barangay Ragayan, Poona Bayabao.

The firearms were surrendered to Disomimba by residents amid the campaign against loose firearms.

Brig. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete, 1st Infantry Division head, said the surrender of the firearms was made possible through the concerted effort and intensified collaboration of the security forces, local chief executives, and other stakeholders in Lanao del Sur.

“This is part of our campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms so that the locals (residents) would feel more secure and safe in their daily activities,” Nafarrete said in a statement. (PNA)
