CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija – This province was placed under a state of calamity on Monday following the onslaught of Super Typhoon Karding.

In a special session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, a resolution declaring Nueva Ecija under the state of calamity due to the extensive damage brought by the typhoon was passed and approved.

The resolution authorizes the provincial government to utilize local disaster risk reduction and management funds for relief and recovery programs.

"The Sanguniang Panlalawigan, after evaluating the report given by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) finds necessary the declaration of state of calamity necessary and with extreme urgency," it stated.

The PDRRMC headed by Governor Aurelio Umali recommended the declaration due to the extensive damage caused by "Karding" on agricultural crops and infrastructure.

The governor also announced the suspension of classes on all levels, both in private and public schools on Tuesday.

However, he said work in government agencies and offices will resume.

Court damage

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday said courthouses in Nueva Ecija were significantly damaged.

"As per the partial report submitted to the Office of Court Administrator, Raul Villanueva, the courts in the areas affected by Typhoon Karding sustained no major damage except our courts in Nueva Ecija, including in Cabanatuan City which would need repairs," Brian Keith Hosaka, SC spokesperson, told reporters in a text message.

The SC has no data yet on the extent of the damage and how many establishments need repairs.

"The Office of Court Administrator Villanueva is making sure that this will be done as soon as possible in order not to unduly disrupt court operations," Hosaka added. (With a report from Benjamin Pulta/PNA)
