Karding-affected population nears 1M: NDRRMC

MANILA – The number of individuals affected by Super Typhoon Karding has climbed to 911,404 or equivalent to 245,063 families in seven regions, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Friday.

These individuals are from 1,759 villages in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Only 921 families are now sheltering in 27 evacuation centers with the remainder returning home or seeking shelter with family and friends.

The casualty count from the typhoon has climbed to 12 dead and six missing.

Of the fatalities, eight have been verified -- five in San Miguel and one in Baliwag in the province of Bulacan; one in Zambales and one in Burdeos, Quezon. The four other deaths are still being validated -- two in Tanay, Rizal; one in Antipolo City and one in Zambales.

Still awaiting confirmation are reports of five missing persons in Mercedes, Camarines Norte and one in Patnanungan, Quezon.

Damaged houses were placed at 59,916 in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and CAR.

The number included 50,025 partially damaged houses and 6,891 totally damaged houses. (PNA)
