MANILA – This year's “habagat” or southwest monsoon season is officially over, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced Wednesday.
Significant weakening of the southwest monsoon and the strengthening of high pressure area over the Asian continent have been observed.
PAGASA chief Vicente Malano said the country is in the process of transition and could expect the gradual start of the northeast monsoon or “amihan” season in the coming days.
He, however, said because of the ongoing La Niña, there is an increased likelihood of above-normal rainfall conditions that could trigger floods, flash floods, and rain-induced landslides.
PAGASA urged all concerned government agencies and the public to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impacts of these events. (PNA)
