LEGAZPI CITY – Authorities arrested a suspect in the killing of a private high school teacher in Claveria town, Masbate province in a hot pursuit operation on Wednesday.

Construction worker Alvin Yanzon, 30, is now detained at the town’s police station.

Initial investigation showed that the victim, Jessabel Mangubat, 24, of Barangay Manapao, Claveria, Masbate, a private high school teacher of Ramon Institute, was found lifeless in her apartment.

Lt. Col. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) spokesperson, in an interview, said the suspect was identified by a witness of the crime.

Based on the report of the Masbate Police Provincial Office, around 11:30 a.m on Wednesday, a concerned citizen reported to the Claveria police station the information about a body found dead in her apartment.

"Authorities during the hot pursuit operation recovered in the possession of the suspect a t-shirt with blood stains and a 14 inches wood as a handle of an axe," Calubaquib said.

Calubaquib added that the teacher suffered a wound in the head from a hard object that caused her death.

Additional information said the incident happened on Tuesday and was only discovered on Wednesday. The suspect was also believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

"Yanzon is a helper of the apartment that was being rented by the victim. While the owner of the apartment went to Masbate City, the suspect got the chance to go inside the room of the victim," Calubaquib said.

Brig. Gen. Rudolph Dimas, PRO-5 director, in a statement, extended his sympathy to the bereaved family and promised immediate justice for the victim.

“The suspect is now under the custody of Claveria Police Station while preparing for the case to be filed. What he has done is unacceptable and he needs to be prosecuted for what he has done to the victim," Dimas said. (PNA)
