ILOILO CITY – A prisoner at the Iloilo District Jail Facility of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Barangay Nanga, Pototan was stabbed to death Friday morning by another person deprived of liberty (PDL) over an old grudge, said the Pototan Municipal Police Station (MPS).

Maj. Roy Tayona, chief of police of Pototan MPS, identified the victim as Melvin C. Gemio from the town of San Miguel and the suspect as Elbert C. Ganancial of the municipality of Calinog.

“Initially, the suspect attacked the victim at his detention cell,” Tayona, speaking in a dialect, said in a phone interview.

The victim was rushed to the Iloilo Provincial Hospital in Barangay Rumbang, Pototan but was declared dead upon arrival by the attending physician due to stab wounds sustained in various parts of his body.

The suspect, facing murder charges, surrendered to the duty jail officer while an improvised bladed weapon used to stab Gemio was turned over to the local police.

“We still continue to conduct an investigation. The Regional Forensic Unit of the Scene of the Crime Operations is here,” Tayona said during the interview.

Last August, around 100 PDLs from the same facility conducted a noise barrage demanding the relief of their former warden complaining about the status of their food inside the district jail. (PNA)
