TACLOBAN CITY – A notorious member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed and another rebel was captured in a clash with soldiers in upland San Miguel village in Las Navas town, Northern Samar province.

Lt. Col. Joemar Buban, Philippine Army 20th Infantry Battalion (IB) commander, said the Mobile Community Support and Sustainment Team (MCSST) of 20th IB was patrolling the village when they encountered two NPA rebels around 11:20 a.m. on Monday.

“The said encounter resulted to the death of Jonny Albario, a notorious NPA member who is responsible for the fatal shooting of a soldier and perpetrators of the ambush using anti-personnel mines that killed some of our government troops this year,” Buban said in a statement on Tuesday.

Albario has pending murder, multiple murder, and multiple frustrated murder cases at the Regional Trial Court in Laoang, Northern Samar.

Buban added that Albario fatally shot Sgt. Marlon Baysa while talking to residents in San Francisco village in Las Navas town last May 10.

He was also behind the detonation of anti-personnel mines that killed Patrolmen Rico Borja and Harvie Lovino in San Miguel village also in Las Navas on April 3.

The slain NPA member was also responsible for the mines blast in Osang village in Catubig town on July 19 that killed Corporal Allen Radam.

The clash also led to the capture of Gonay Rosco, a member of NPA’s Yunit Militia in San Miguel village who joined the terrorist movement in 2021.

Buban said Rosco participated in the ambush against the community support last April 3.

Seized from the possession of the NPA rebels are a 9-mm pistol and magazine and ammunition, a .45-caliber pistol with magazine and ammunition, two anti-personnel mines, a hand grenade, a mobile phone, various explosive paraphernalia, and documents. (PNA)
