MANILA – The European Union Delegation in Manila welcomed on Thursday the Philippines' support for a joint declaration on privacy and data protection.

"The Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines welcomes the Philippines’ endorsement of the Joint Declaration on Privacy and the Protection of Personal Data that was issued at the Forum for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific held in Paris," it said in a statement.

The declaration was signed in February 2022 by the European Union, Australia, Comoros, India, Japan, Mauritius, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Sri Lanka; and was eventually endorsed by the Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan.

The Philippines supported the initiative through a note verbale dated July 5, 2022, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The joint declaration aims to develop international policy discussions and cooperation in the areas of data protection and privacy standards.

Under the declaration, signatories would work to establish comprehensive legal frameworks and policies; promote lawfulness, fairness, transparency, purpose limitation, data minimization, limited data retention, data security and accountability; and ensure safeguards for international transfers to enable cross-border data flows, among others.
