CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Northern Mindanao (DENR-10) on Wednesday identified two pilot areas in this city for the installation of its trash trap project.

The two areas will be in Barangay Lapasan, according to its chairperson Julito Ogsimer, which will be managed by 28 zone leaders.

"The project is in collaboration with the said two communities, DENR-10 and the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro)," he said.

Ogsimer believes the trash trap installation will reduce the floating garbage on creeks and waterways in the city and lead to lesser incidents of urban flooding.

Clenro chief Armen Cuenca said the trash trap project complements with the local government's "trash to cash" program.

"The trash to cash program of the city government started in 2019 during the full operation of the (new) sanitary landfill of the city, and was adopted in the administration of Mayor Rolando Uy," he said.

On Oct. 25, all community leaders in Barangay Lapasan will converge for orientation regarding the project.

Funds amounting to PHP100,000 will be subsidized first by DENR-10, which will cover six months to augment the honorarium of two caretakers until it will be turned over to the barangay government unit.

Meanwhile, DENR-10 Director Henry Adornado said his agency, together with Clenro, and the 12 coastal villages of the city, recently entered into a partnership with the signing of a memorandum of understanding institutionalizing the coastal cleanup activity.

Together with other public and private stakeholders, Adornado said the agreement will also adopt a digital monitoring platform to address the garbage problem in the coastal area of this city through the "Challenge for Change: CDO (Cagayan de Oro) Limpyo Dagat Initiative."

The program will also adopt a monitoring and evaluation system as well as the creation of a multi-sectoral composite monitoring and evaluation team for the purpose. (PNA)
